"Dimension X" and "X Minus One"

Postby Dutch George » Wed Dec 30, 2009 1:38 pm

There needs to be a thread about these two shows here in the Science Fiction section for those who might not be aware of them.

I have really enjoyed these two series. Some of the episodes are somewhat silly, but many are excellent and were adapted from leading science fiction authors. Various episodes in these two series cover all sorts of science fiction topics, such as space travel, time travel, and unusual events happening in daily life - similar to the Twilight Zone TV show. Many have endings that will surprise you.

Download thecomplete X Minus One series here. Download all three ZIP files. http://www.archive.org/details/OTRR_Cer ... _Minus_One

Here are some of my favorite episodes. Some were performed in both series.

Dimension X:
Outer Limit (the first show is one of the best and sets a good tone for what's to follow)
To The Future
A Logic Named Joe (amazing similarities to today's Internet, written in 1950)
Time And Time Again

X Minus One:
A Pail Of Air
A Gun For Dinosaur
Lulungameena
Project Mastodon
Sam, This Is You
Discovery Of Morniel Mathaway (silly at first, but it gets better)
The Old Die Rich

Another couple of cool episodes are "The Knock" and "The Parade". The Two Thousand Plus series was a good one too, though not near as many of those survive.

Here's another fun series in a similar mold: Tales of Tomorrow with Raymond Edward Johnson as the host. They only did 15 shows, and the ones that survived have rather poor sound quality, but the stories themselves are quite good.
"The Other Now" episode features Dick York (the mortal husband on TV's BEWITCHED) and that story is pretty touching.

You can hear it at the bottom link on http://www.radiohorrorhosts.com/talesoftomorrow.html

Thanks for that link, Monsterwax. I'm downloading those as I write this. I find some of these short series are just as fun as the famous shows with hundreds of episodes. Your example of 2000 Plus above was one of the short ones I've enjoyed. I'm grateful for any more recommendations you'd care to make.

Here's a short series I'm about halfway through (alphabetically) and am enjoying. It's called Peril. It's not really science fiction - it's more like Escape or Suspense but they're good stories and some have quite surprising endings.

Edited to add: I think the [ is messing up the tennesseebill link. Copy and paste the whole line into your browser.

Great topic! Yes, the person who said some episodes are silly is right. And yes, there are some excellent ones. I liked "Mars Is Heaven" where the Martians took the warm memories of the Earth visitors. However the Martians turn out to be meanies.

The narrators were Fred Collins and Norman Rose. Mr. Rose passed away in 2004. I recall seeing him in the 1971 movie "The Anderson Tapes," where he played a rich man being robbed. I must see he looked like he sounded: stately and tall. He was the voice of Juan Velez in a coffee commercial. :)

Cheers!

Hello. X minus 1 is definately one of my favorite shows, I've listened to every episode at least once, and lots of them several times. I thought Dimension X was a rerun of the X minus 1 shows, just a different name. I'll have to check that out and listen to the Dimension X that aren't repeats of X minus 1. I found a fantastic set of sci fi shows on Ebay that contained (I believe) 605 total shows on one disc. All of x minus 1, dimension x, planet man, tom corbett space cadet were the longest running ones, then all kinds of obscure short lived shows The Fifth Horseman is amazing and what I consider a must listen to anyone who is a sci fi fan.

Hello to you! We are both new here. I liked the theme from one of the two series. Can't recall which one. It was a huge orchestral swirl starting with brass and ending with violins. It was rather electronic music sounding. But I tend to believe it was a full orchestra. Don't recall if the composer was even mentioned.

I have just recently discovered these shows online. Such great series! Both programs are extremely thought-provoking and imaginative!

If you do not want to download all the programs , I found a large collection of Dimension X, X Minus One for free streaming here: 3rian.com/Welcome/sci-fi.html

Happy listening! ~ Thomas

Great shows, but I do find them a little bombastic at times. As if they weren't quite confident in the material and had to over-do it with sound effects and shouting. This isn't helped by the audio mix which usually puts the sound effects louder than the dialogue. Anyone else notice this? Might just be my ears.

Mine too. And the 1980's Twilight Zone did a great version of the story, too!
