Pictures on the Radio?

After I entered the newfangled television store, the salesman showed me one of his "TVs". All that it showed was the following picture. The accompanying sound was just a steady tone. I predict this is just a flash in the pan, and will never replace radio.

If you are too young to recognize the above image, it is a test pattern that was carried on many TV channels just before and just after normal program hours. It also appeared during the many intervals of technical problems experienced with early TV. TV screens were round or circular in those days, and the camera typically was zoomed in to fill most of the screen.
